Phantogram: Mouthful of Diamonds

Thank you to a mystery person for bringing them to my life.  ;)

We were running late when they performed at Lolla and thus missed out large.  I can say they are one of those bands I have listened to once and have fallen in love.  Hard.  Lolla brought me so many new ‘love affairs’.  My heart feels so full.

They often describe their sound as “street beat, psych pop”.  They are  inspired by artists like J Dilla, Madlib, Cocteau Twins, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Yes, The Beatles, David Bowie, John Frusciante, Serge Gainsbourg and Kevin Shields.

‘you’ve got a mouthful of diamonds
and a pocketful of secrets
i know you’re never telling anyone
because the patterns they control your mind
those patterns take away my time
hello, goodbye’

‘I would rather die
Than to be with you’

Thank me later.

Portugal. The Man – if you need some new music…while you sit at your desk.

This video is from Lolla.  I wish I saw him.  It was pissing down with a torrential rain storm and I was standing under a tree getting more and more soaked in a sun top, mini skirt, straw hat and kicks.  Good times. ;)

Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars Wed

…and of course she wears a wedding dress that is perfect.  Azzedine Alaia.

You know what I love about her?  She’s class all the way.  I’m not going to go on and gush but honestly, she’s one of my style inspirations.

Spotlight: Zara Men’s Suits – Scott

GREY STRUCTURED BLAZER 199.00 CAD Ref. 1564/306GREY STRUCTURED TROUSERS 99.90 CAD Ref. 1564/307

Is it just me, but I had no idea that Zara made the most lovely structured suits for men.  I guess I’m too busy swooning after the ladies skirts, dresses and other debauchery to have noticed in the past.

Looking at the suits on line…ladies.  You need to get your boys on this tip asap.  They are sublime.  Coals, khaki, grey and slates.  Perfect summer suits for weddings, nights out and lovingly structured.  They remind me of suits Jamie Hince from the Kills wears and what my boyfriend (ahem) Diplo wears.

I have to actually give a shout out to Scott for giving me the head’s up on Zara.  As you can see in this pic…exhibit A, Zara Structured Blazers and trousers.  Total retail price $300 CAD.  He mentioned to me, ‘Why pay a $1000 for a suit when you can get one for $200 at Zara’.  This is a fashionisto in the making.  Perfection Scott well played and well worn.

Mad Men Meets Banana Republic for Katherine

Mad Men Inspired Looks at Banana Republic

Mad Men Inspired Looks at Banana Republic

So apparently the lead costume designer at Mad Men concocted this collection of inspired looks for Banana Republic.  Do I like?  Sure.  But honestly – its not really Mad Men is it?  Its just a lil bit retro and a lil bit modern 50′s meet 2011 nouveau chic.  Really you can make this look by going into any retail store right now and mixing and matching.

If you want to be even more creative – go to a vintage shop and hit it up on a regular basis for some extra crinoline, cute sweater sets and some sexy hosiery for a fraction of what BR is hawking these outfits.

The Mad Men® Collection Houndstooth Dress $185

The Mad Men® Collection Houndstooth Dress $185

I do find the Houndstooth Dress for $185 romantic.  It looks nicely constructed and nice quality.  Its hard to find this baby in the stores right and sizes are limited but I think it would make a nice staple piece.

The Mad Men® Collection Betty Dress $185

The Mad Men® Collection Betty Dress $185 illustrates my first point to a T.  See what I mean?  Its nice and all but for $185 – the construct works but the colour is meh.

Overall, the looks are clean, pretty and wearable.  If you are keen wait until they go on sale.  If your size is sold out..check ebay asap.

Why is J. Crew charging us so much?

From The Toronto Star

By Dana Flavelle |  Tue Aug 23 2011

Popular U.S. retailer J. Crew opened its first store in Canada to long line-ups and immediate controversy over its pricing strategy.

Like many other U.S. retailers, the preppy fashion chain is charging higher prices in Canada than in the U.S., on average 15 per cent more before taxes.

The move has annoyed some of its Canadian customers, who believe Canadian prices should be on par with the U.S., given the currencies are roughly equivalent.

J. Crew has responded to customers with a letter signed by President Jenna Lyons that said the retailer is taking the concerns very seriously.

“The change in cost for merchandise purchased in our stores and online as necessary to keep pricing consistent with our new – and expanding – retail operations,” the letter said.

“However, we understand your concerns and will continue to work to provide you with an excellent online shopping experience. For J. Crew, the reception to our new store in Canada has been nothing short of extraordinary,” the letter also said.

The disparity is particularly noticeable online, where the final prices on J. Crew’s Canadian site are as much as 40 per cent higher than on its U.S. site once taxes and shipping are added.

For example, the U.S. price for a pair of Café Capri plaid wool pants is $138 while the Canadian price is $160, a difference of 15 per cent. Once shipping and taxes are added, the U.S. price is $159, while the Canadian price is $223, a difference of 40 per cent.

Many Canadians are familiar with J. Crew’s U.S. prices because they previously ordered online from the U.S. site, or drove to border stores such as the one in Buffalo to make purchases.

The controversy has taken some of the shine off J. Crew’s widely anticipated move into Canada.

There were long lineups outside on opening day at the Yorkdale shopping mall store last Thursday, Aug. 18, its first outside the U.S. market.

J. Crew isn’t the only U.S. retailer to charge higher prices in Canada. Many retailers do so, citing the higher cost of doing business in a smaller market and also higher government-mandated duties and tariffs.
